Poison Dart Red Frog

The Poison Dart Red Frog is an amphibian highly polymorphic; this means that has a wide variety of colors. In Costa Rica prevailing red color with black spots, but on the southern tip of Costa Rica have a single color can be red, orange or beige.

Its striking coloration warns potential predators that the frog has potent neurotoxic venom into the skin. The venom of these frogs is taken from the insects that eat mainly ants and ticks, if it is fed in captivity only allow fruit flies to carry venom into the skin. The adult measures between 19 mm and 25.5 mm long.

Habitat & Range: Lowland rainforest, on the forest floor, low-lying branches and fallen logs no more than three feet above the ground.

In Costa Rica, the Poison Dart Frog is common in the Central Valley and Caribbean slope (Puerto Viejo, Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui and Tortuguero).
